The hijab represents faith, modesty, and identity, and every woman’s relationship with it is deeply personal and unique. Join us as we uncover the significance of World Hijab Day, and highlight the empowering message of modesty.
WHAT IS WORLD HIJAB DAY?
Established in 2013, World Hijab Day calls on people of all backgrounds to recognise the hijab as an emblem of faith, modesty, and courage. Initiated by Nazma Khan, this annual event provides a platform to educate, raise awareness, and dispel the misconceptions surrounding the hijab.
World Hijab Day encourages Muslim women worldwide in their shared commitment to modesty, this global event fosters dialogue, challenges stereotypes, and serves as a powerful reminder of the profound beauty within diversity.

THE HIJAB AS A JOURNEY
There is no dispute among Islamic scholars that the hijab is mandatory for the believing women. In this article we do not intend to diminish this in any way, but we would like to acknowledge that in these times some of our sisters are struggling. We believe that the facts must be spoken about but also that we need to provide a voice and reassurance for those who are quietly grappling with the hijab and feeling alone.
For some women, the hijab may not be a fixed destination but a journey of spiritual growth. Some begin wearing it as young girls, maybe inspired by family or culture. Others find their way to it later in life, after years of reflection, self-discovery, or perhaps reversion to Islam.
I’ve met women for whom the hijab was a natural extension of their lives and others who bravely embraced niqab the very first day they reverted to Islam. And then there are women in their senior years who have slowly embarked on their modesty journeys, each step filled with heartfelt reflections.
What ties all of these experiences together? A shared intention to please Allah and the understanding that modesty is not about perfection, but about striving to be better every day. And we ask Allah to make it easy for us.
We asked some of our followers about how they would advise any Sisters who are struggling with hijab…
- “We are all at different stages in this process - and that’s okay. Some of us are more covered than others, and that’s okay too. What matters is that we continue to strive.”
- “Do not give up. Do not be negatively influenced by others. You are doing this for the sake of Allah.”
WHY THE HIJAB IS OBLIGATORY IN ISLAM
The hijab is not merely a cultural or symbolic choice; it is an Islamic obligation ordained in the Qur’an and upheld by the Sunnah. Allah says in the Qur’an:
“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their private parts and not to show their adornment except what is apparent of it…”
(Surah An-Nur, 24:31)
SIDE NOTE: You will have some argue that the hijab is not explicitly mentioned by name in the Quran and some will believe that this means it is not obligatory upon us. We are not scholars here, but for those who believe such things, we advise you to revert back to our genuine scholars in Islam, and research the context of the jilbab and the historical cultural norms of the time to really understand this subject. Without the cultural context of that time it is not possible to accurately interpret such matters. It is an unfortunate fact that some English translations of this ayah are not exactly "spot on", which has been proven to leave a lot of non-arab muslim women confused, to say the least. Personally, i have found that the Quran translation from Sahih International has been the most reliable in terms of accuracy.
I urge every Muslimah reading this to memorise this ayah, because it is the strongest proof that we have to refute the argument regarding the command of the hijab.

Surah Al-Ahzāb - Ayah 59 - (33:59)
[1210]- As chaste believing women.
[1211]- Or "and Allāh was Forgiving and Merciful" of what occurred before this injunction or before knowledge of it.
_____
Wearing the hijab is an act of worship, aligning the individual’s outward actions with their inner faith. While some may find it challenging, it’s important to approach it with humility and intention.
Taking time is okay, however; it is important not to become heedless. Recognising the hijab’s obligation is vital not only for personal growth, but also for inspiring others within our community. Denying or dismissing its significance can inadvertently harm our iman (faith) and also that of the Sisters around us.
Instead, aim to be a positive influence - one who encourages, uplifts, and supports others in adhering to Allah’s guidance.
CELEBRATING EVERY HIJAB JOURNEY
Every woman’s hijab story is as unique as her fingerprints. And while our paths may differ, the end goal is the same… earning the pleasure of Allah through submission, modesty, and faith.
Perhaps you’re a new hijabi, and this is your first time experiencing first World Hijab Day by styling your first modest outfit. Or maybe you’ve been wearing it for years but are experimenting with hijab fashion to express your creativity. Wherever you are on your hijab journey, know that your efforts and intentions are seen by Allah - and they matter.
Remember, modesty is empowering. It’s a daily reminder that what truly defines us is not our appearance, but our character, values, and devotion.
FOSTERING A SENSE OF COMMUNITY
World Hijab Day is also about building a supportive sisterhood. Instead of judging where someone else may be falling short, extend a hand of compassion and solidarity.
Here’s an inspiring reminder from our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):
“Do not belittle any good deed, even meeting your brother with a cheerful face.”
(Sahih Muslim 2626)
EMPOWERING MODESTY THROUGH FASHION
The rise of modest fashion has made it easier than ever for Muslim women to express their personal style while staying true to Islamic principles. From flowy abayas to chic 2-pieces, today’s options are abundant and diverse.
When selecting pieces, consider fabrics, colours, and cuts that promote confidence and comfort. By curating your own wardrobe, you’ll find that even something as simple as an outfit can be an uplifting act of self-expression and devotion.
Above all, take pride in your hijab - it’s a crown of faith, a symbol of empowerment, and a testament to your strength as a Muslimah.

EMBARK ON YOUR JOURNEY WITH CONFIDENCE
World Hijab Day recognises more than fabric. It’s a nod to faith, courage, and unity. Whether you’re starting, restarting, or continuing your modesty journey, remember that every step brings you closer to Allah.
For those finding it challenging, keep striving. You are not alone, and the rewards of this path far outweigh the struggles. Surround yourself with positivity, lean on your sisters, and remain steadfast.
